The slaying in Duisberg, Germany Salvatore Pelle is a leader of a powerfull 'Ndrangheta faction in San Luca, Calabria. His clan is known as the Pelle-Vottari-Romeo family and is at war with another San Luca family, the Strianga-Nirta family, for over 16 years. The feud started in 1991 during carnival celibrations when both clans got into a fight. Only 2 days after the fight 2 men were murdered. In December 2006 a member of the Pelle-Vottari-Romeo familie murdered the wife of Giovanni Nirta. In august 2007 Giovanni Nirta struck back with the murder of 6 members from the Pelle-Vottari-Romeo clan in Duisberg, Germany, outside an Italian restaurant. One of the victims was the suspected murderer of Giovanni Nirta's wife.

Salvatore Pelle was a fugitive since 1991, but was arrested on March 10, 2007, prior to the Duisberg murders. His family has strong connections to Columbian drug kartels and Turkish drug dealers.
