||Canada/ Montreal| Rizzuto war
The Rizzuto war was a Mafia conflict in Montreal which started around 2009. One of the catalysts for the growing tensions was the RCMP, who had launched several crushing investigations to withdraw the power of the Rizzuto family. The 2006 Project Colisee in particular crippled the organization by locking up keymembers such as Francesco Arcadi, Lorenzo Giordano and Rocco Sollecito behind bars. In 2006 Boss Vito Rizzuto had been extradited to the US to stand trial in the three capo slayings, which dated back in 1981. He was sentenced in 2007 and was put behind bars in Colorado. The control of the massive drugnetwork, which ranges from North to South America and Europe, was open for the take.
In 2009 former Bonanno leader Salvatore Montagna was banned from the US by authorities and moved back to Montreal. According to some sources he was one of the benefactors to start a rebel group against the Rizzuto's. Old confidants such as Moreno Gallo, Joe Di Maulo, Raynald Desjardins and Juan Ramon Fernandez joined and formed the heads of the new coalition and found support with Toronto and Hamilton based 'Ndrangheta clans. Some of them, such as the Luppino clan from Hamilton, still wanted revenge for the slaying of Paolo Violi and his brothers and now had the perfect opportunity to do so. Tensions between 'Ndrangheta clans had already been visible earlier, for instance in 2005, when Calabrian drugdealer Sergio Piccirilli had a fall back with Francesco Arcadi and began to turn aggressive. Although no violence occurred back then, it is however possible that Piccirilli was also involved in the following warfare.
The first casualty linked to the warfare was Rizzuto associate Mario Marabella, a strongman for Agostino Cuntrera who disappeared in December 2008. In august 2009 Rizzuto drugdealer Fredrico Del Peschio was gunned down in broad daylight, presumably by hitman Joseph Ducarme. But it wasn't until the murder of Nick Rizzuto Jr., son of boss Vito Rizzuto, that things turned ugly. Top men of the Rizzuto clan, such as Nicolo Rizzuto, Paolo Renda and Agostino Cuntrera, were all targeted and killed within months to come. Also Salvatore Montagna was ultimately killed after he had fallen out with faction-leader Raynald Desjardins. All this time Rizzuto was unable to react while sitting behind bars. But since his release from prison in October 2012 he was destined to take measures. In the year following his release more than 10 people have been killed in revenge. In total the war has led to more than 30 mob related murders, some of which were even committed abroad. The Rizzuto war is the bloodiest warfare to hit Montreal history.
On December 23, 2013, boss Vito Rizzuto died of natural causes. His funeral service was being held at the Loreto funeral home, which is owned by the family. Giving the violence from the past few years his sudden and natural death came as a surprise. Not many were informed of his ill situation until he passed away. Rumored successors were Rocco Sollecito, Francesco Arcadi or the elder Domenico Manno. However, in May 2016 Sollecito was fatally shot as part of a new and final "cleanup".
