||New York| Joseph Catania
Death: February 5, 1931 - The Bronx
Joseph Catania was born in 1902 and probably got his last name from the east-Sicilian town called Catania. It was very common for Italians to name themselves after the town they were born or their ancestors were born. He was the nephew of Ciro, Vincent and Nicholas Terranova and was a top captain of Joe Masseria during the 1920's and early 1930's and operated mostly in the Bronx. On February 5th, 1931, he was murdered by Joseph Valachi, a soldier loyal to Salvatore Maranzano during the Castellammarese War. He was murdered only a month prior to the murder of his leader Masseria. Catania was given one of the biggest funerals ever seen in the Bronx. About 40 open cars filled with flowers drove to the cemetary followed by at least another 50 cars. The picture above from Catania's grave comes from findagrave.com.
